Anya Nikolaevna is the main protagonist of the 1997 movie Anastasia.

Bio[edit | edit source]

A young Anya (then still Anastasia) used to live a pretty cozy life as the daughter of Tsar Nicholas II. Then her old man exiled the sorcerer-mystic Rasputin because of treason (i.e., Rasputing had something with the Russian queen), and Rasputin returns the favor by bestowing a terrible curse upon the family: The Russian Revolution. Anastasia is forced to flee, but unfortunately hit her head and was struck with amnesia while trying to board a moving train.

Anya (now Anya) spends ten years in a rural orphanage, with no clue about her true identity aside from a necklace making some vague mention of Paris. Inconveniently, he earnest wish to visit Paris is hindered by the Soviet tradition of not letting people leave the shitshow of a country. More conveniently, her exiled grandmother in Paris just offered 10 million rubles to anyone that returns Anastasia to her, spawning an entire industry of gopniks trying to smuggle various 'Anastasias' out of the country.

Complicating these matters further is the fact that Rasputin, despite of what the beginning of the flick would tell you, had not died for good. Because of course he didn't. While apparently fairly content with being stuck in limbo, the revelation that Anastasia is still alive and might spawn another batch of Romanovs leaves him somewhat miffed, and he returns to the world of the living to take care of unfinished business.
