Krampus is a figure from Alpine folklore.

Bio[edit | edit source]

In the Alpine regions of Europe, Santa Claus is customarily accompanied by Krampus - a creature entity with shaggy black hair and long claws. Where Santa plays the good cop by rewarding obedient children with presents, Krampus acts as the bad cop and spanks the crap out of naughty children by means of his birchen rod. In some variants of the story, Krampus goes so far as to abudct obstinate children by stuffing them into a bag and carrying them away.

Like Santa, Krampus has a rather complicated background story: While his monstrous appearance is emblematic of the Christian Devil and Krampus' arrival in pop culture invariably sees him as a demonic entity, he likely originated from the Alpine Perchta. The latter, in turn, is a Pre-Christian figure that actually came in good (Schönperchten) and bad (Schlachperchten) varieties, akin to the Ljósálfar and Dökkálfar type of elves found in Norse mythology. The Perchta character itself also may be a demonized form of the Germanic goddess Holda.

In 8chanmania[edit | edit source]

Krampus debuted in the Christmas-themed 8chanmania IX, but lacking records mean nothing beyond him not winning a belt has survived.

During the equally Christmas-themed 8chanmania XLIII, Kramps and The Grinch fought over who was better in ruining Christmas. While Krampus technically doesn't have the slightest damn to do with Christmas, he still defeated the Grinch, and got stomped on by Brauggi one round later.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • While Krampus is more or less exclusive to the Alpine cultural area, other countries in Western Europe tend to have corresponding figures - be it the Père Fouettard of France, or the slightly less monstrous Knecht Ruprecht of Germany.
