"Our words are backed by nuclear power"
— Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi was the most notable Indian statesmen of the 20th century. Using entirely peaceful means such as civil disobedience, he successfully lead to India's independence from the British Empire, and generally is often cited as an advocate for peace. His assassination in 1948 by a radical Hindu nationalist caused great mourning both in India and other parts of the world.

A highly popular figure, Gandhi was immortalized in many video games, the Civilization series being the most prominent example. Alas, the latter takes certain "artistic liberties" with his character...

Drop the Bomb[edit | edit source]

Civilization's Gandhi generally resembles his real-life equivalent - a soft-spoken man of great wisdom who loathes the use of violence and will accuse you of being a warmonger if you so much as give another civilization a mean look.

Then, Gandhi researches the Manhattan Project, builds his first atomic weapons, and you come to realize that the "peace" he is so fond of is that of a radioactive nuclear wasteland. Seriously. More than one novice player thought bullying the seemingly anti-militaristic India was a perfectly good idea, only to find his cities disappearing under mushroom clouds one turn after he declared war. Or refused to give Gandhi the technology he wants. Or angered him in any other way. Or simply because Gandhi can.

If you thought the Cold War was scary, you ain't seen nothing yet.

In 8chanmania[edit | edit source]

Season 1[edit | edit source]

Gandhi may or may not have debuted in 8chanmania VII.

Being as obsessed with nukes WMDs as he is, it came as little surprise that Gandhi immediately came to cherish a living one, namely Utsuho Reiuji. The somewhat bizarre couple formed a tag team for (currently) two manias:

In 8chanmania XXXI, Gandhi and Utsuho fought and won against Metal Gear's Raiden and Jetstream Sam (and very nearly would have nuked the ring itself to ashes while doing so). Alas, all of the nuclear fission products didn't help them against Mega Man and Proto Man.

Season 2[edit | edit source]

The two once more came to bring strategic annihilation upon the world during 8chanmania XLIV. There, they won their initial fight against Strelok and Artjom, but even their power of nuclear destruction was not enough to end Doomguy and Ranger.

8chanmania C[edit | edit source]

Gandhi was one of the statesmen invited to the historical rumble of 8chanmania C by George Washington, and pulled off far more tricks than his wiry body reasonably should be capable off. Still, with Utsuho having turned against him, he was thrown out of the ring in the later parts of the match.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Gandhi's fondness of nukes originally stemmed from a bug in Civilization 1 that sometimes caused his priority for using nukes to be the highest of all other faction leaders, when it had been meant to be the lowest. The outcome proved so unintentionally hilarious that his priorities for using nukes was intentionally put abnormally high in all subsequent titles in a form of running gag across the series.
  • Gandhi's actual name is Mohandas Karamchad Gandhi. Mahatma is a honorific title which can be translated as something like "Venerable".
