"You must play Sega Saturn!"
— Segata Sanshiro

Segata Sanshiro was an advertisement character created to promote the Sega Saturn.

Bio[edit | edit source]

A judo fighter modeled after the character Sugara Sanshiro from a 1943 drama film, Segata's sole purpose in life is to remind you that you absolutely must play Sega Saturn. And he doesn't take 'No' for an answer. No matter if you're a grown man or a school-aged child, Segata Sanshiro will beat the crap out of you if you don't play Sega Saturn. We're not even joking - this man can throw you so hard, you literally explode upon impact.

Segata Sanshiro rapidly gained a cult following in Japan; with him being cited as one of the main reasons why the Sega Saturn outsold the Nintendo 64 in Japan. He even got his own game, Segata Sanshirō Shinken Yūgi. It's fairly plausible his absence in the western market contributed to the much lower sales of the Saturn in the same area. Some fans even speculate him not being brought back for the Dreamcast contributed to its premature death.

In 8chanmania[edit | edit source]

Segata Sanshiro debuted in 8chanmania XXVI, where he fought and lost against Satoru Iwata. Notable highlights in the fight include Sanshiro belittling Iwata over the Nintendo consoles being only aimed at children, while Iwata calmly replied that, if nothing else, his consoles still exist.

For 8chanmania XXXI, Sanshiro and Iwata formed a tag team. They sadly lost to Ren and Squilliam Fancyson in the first round.

Segata's last show was in 8chanmania LV. He once again was thrown out in the first round, this time by Nintendo's own Wario.
