Friedrich Nietzsche was a German philosopher and philologist.
Bio[edit | edit source]
Nietzsche had a fairly colorful youth that saw him sending self-made musical compositions to Richard Wagner (who didn't like them), studying theology to follow his father as a Lutheran priest (which he realized he didn't like), and then earned himself a post as a professors of philology at the University of Basel - aged 24. By the time he was 35, the worsening of his chronic health problems forced him to drop his tenure, but in turn allowed him to focus on philosophy instead.
Nietzsche took a great deal of inspiration from Feuerbach (especially concerning his views on Christianity and the nature of god), as well as Schopenhauer; although he broke with the latter's endless pessimism by the time he wrote Thus Spoke Zarathustra. A core argument on his part is that society faces a crisis of nihilism because its hitherto source of morals - god and religion - have become superfluous through the advancement of science. To replace this gaping hole, he came up with the concept of the "Übermensch" - a rational, creative, and above all else independent individual whose 'will to power' does not require mastery over others, but spiritual mastery over oneself.
Unfortunately, Nietzsches's health issues just wouldn't leave him alone. He suffered a stroke in 1988, a severe mental breakdown in 1989, and another stroke in the same year that left him unable to walk or speak. A pneumonia and a third stroke finally did him for good on August 25th, 1901.
In 8chanmania[edit | edit source]
Friedrich Nietzsche only appeared in 8chanmania XIII. The philosopher tore into Carl Brutananadilewski after the latter suggested his mustache was the manlier one, but despite of an early win, Nietzsche was sorted out by Kung Fu Man in the second round.
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- During a voluntary year of service within the Prussian army, a young Nietzsche was noted to be one of the regiment's finest riders.
