Grape-kun was a male Humboldt penguin who was infatuated with a cardboard cutout of Hululu from Kemono Friends.

Bio[edit | edit source]

Originally born and raised in Tokyo's Hamura Zoo, Grape-kun was named for the purple identification ring attached to his left flipper. He originally had bonded with a female penguin named Midori and even had a chick with her after their move to Saitama's Tobu Zoo, but Tobu staff decided to move the chick to another zoo to reduce the risk of inbreeding. Shattered by this, Midori sought a new mate, and Grape-kun became ostracized by the rest of the colony.

In April 2017, Tobu Zoo placed numerous cardboard cutouts of the then-popular Kemono Friends characters across his grounds to attract visitors. The enclosure holding the Humboldt penguins naturally got a cutout of Kemono's own Humboldt penguin, Hululu. What Tobu staff had not anticipated was that poor, lonely Grape-kun became oddly fixated on the advertising prop; spending hours upon hours staring at it in what almost looked like a man in love.

His devotion to his waifu quickly made him an internet star, but alas, Grape-kun already was an old gentleman when he first met her. He died of natural causes on October 12th of the same year, reducing a sizeable chunk of the internet (including (You) to snot and tears. Hululu's cutout was temporarily removed after his death, but as of 2018, the penguin enclosure has a new cutout that shows both Hululu and Grape-kun together.

In 8chanmania[edit | edit source]

Grape-kun made his 8chanmania debut in 8chanmania IX, with Hululu watching over him as the referee. His first opponent was Pingu. Not to be outclassed by another penguin, Grape-kun asserted his dominance and showed his cleverness by winning via ring-out. Nothing could have prepared him for his next opponent, though. Wampa was brutal and uncaring, nearly slaughtering the poor bird in front of his beloved waifu.

The penguin has not been seen since, but it can be surmised he and Hululu are both in a better place.
