MissingNo. is a glitch Pokémon from Pokémon Red & Blue.
Bio[edit | edit source]
When encountering a Pokémon out in the wild, the game usually looks into a data buffer that holds specific values for each of the Pokémon normally encountered in that area. Since storage sparse was sparse, however, the programmers occasionally used this specific data buffer to hold other stuff. Such, as for instance, the name of the player character.
It goes beyond saying that neither 'Red' nor 'Shitfuck' are valid identifiers for the random encounter system. If players do the trickrun to have the game load an encounter based on these anyway, the game sees itself forced to improvise - in the way of someone trying to improvise Minoan Linear A script on a Klingon-lettered rotary dial phone with an instruction manual made it China.
The result of this unholy ritual (and for kids back then, MissingNo. was right next to summoning a demon from The Lesser Key of Solomon) was a Glitch Pokémon that mysteriously increased the quantity of the sixth item in the player's inventory by 128, but also came with the perpetual risk of permanent corruption to your safe file.
In 8chanmania[edit | edit source]
MissingNo. fought in the Pokémon-themed 8chanmania LIV; with the Pokemon Trainer serving as ... well, what do you think?
It managed to defeat the Citizen Snips of the Fullderp Champ before the latter could buff itself above everything that is good and holy, and lead to immense mental trauma in the unfortunate Ditto of Android 21 when the latter tried to copy it. Still, its attempt to glitch-run straight to the belt was cut short when it met the Blue-Eyes White Dragon of Seto Kaiba.
