Mr. Game & Watch is an amalgation of the player characters from Nintendo's early Game & Watch handheld electronic toys.
Bio[edit | edit source]
Years (well, three years) before Nintendo first became known to a wider audience through the Famicom / NES, design legend Gunpei Yokoi saw a bored businessman playing around with his calculator during a train ride. Since riding cramped trains or other forms of public transport to work is Japan's second national pastime (the first being working yourself to death once you arrive at work), Mr. Yokoi saw a great opportunity.
One business meeting with the folks over at Sharp later, Nintendo (hitherto known for classical toys and playing cards) started to produce the Game & Watch series. Although not the first instance of handheld electronic toys on the market, it greatly helped to popularize the concept; inspiring both a plethora of copycat products, the Gameboy, and a Smash character most players have come to utterly despise.
In 8chanmania[edit | edit source]
Mr. Game & Watch fought in 8chanmania LXXVIII. Byleth unsurprisingly recognized it as a fellow Smash character, but alas, coming from a 2D screen, being forced into 3d for Smash, and then getting turned back into a 2d sprite for FirePro apparently did a number on him.
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- While often considered as a grandfather figure to the Gameboy and handheld consoles in general, the Game & Watch's lack of exchangeable game modules means it technically was not a console in its own right.
