The Poison Mushroom is a recurring enemy from the Super Mario series.
Bio[edit | edit source]
When Nintendo developed Super Mario Bros 2 (or Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels, for the filthy ga*jin out there), they desperately looked for ways to make the game more challenging without having to heave more data on the then-struggling NES cartridges. One easy way to circumvent this issue was to take already existing objects, alter their behavior, and give them a palette swap while they were at it.
The Poison Mushroom was one of these new creations. Whereas your regular mushroom would either turn Mario into his larger form or even grant him an extra life, the Poison Mushroom would instead shrink or flat-out murder the Italian plumber upon contact. This made it a proper stage hazard and, given the players' Pavlovian behavior of chasing after everything vaguely mushroom-shaped, led to plenty of on-screen deaths.
In 8chanmania[edit | edit source]
The Poison Mushroom fought in 8chanmania LXXV. Burning with a malevolent plan to return the Mushroom Kingdom to mushrooms proper, it did a number on a largely clueless Chuckster, and likely would have gone on a campaign of mycotic genocide if X had not put a stop to its plans.
