The Yule Log is a tree stem traditionally cut up and burned away over a hearth from the period of Christmas until Twelfth Night (~ January 6th).

Bio[edit | edit source]

As the name suggests, the Yule Log initially was tied to the Pre-Christian, Germanic pagan Yule Rite. But whereas the latter originally might have been tied to fearsome concepts such as the Wild Hunt and associated blood sacrifices, it eventually mellowed down to an annual solstice event accompanied by grand feasts and general merriment in order to fight back the growing darkness of the winter months. Christianity tried its best to demonize the pagan tradition, but it still survived to this day.

As per tradition, each yule log is part of an entire tree cut down for the specific occasion. Each part is subsequently fed into the fire of the household heart, with bad luck and/or inevitable doom befalling those families that fail to either burn a new log on each subsequent evening or keep the fire lit continuously. One supposedly could tell fortunes by counting the sparks springing from the burning block and prevent fires by storing the spent remains of a used log under one's bed, but as we all know, the only true source for good fortune comes from your certified YouTube ASMR celebrity.

In 8chanmania[edit | edit source]

The Yule Log debuted in 8chanmania IX, but lacking records mean nothing beyond it not winning a belt has survived.

Like the logs you just can't get down the toilet, the Yule Log resurfaced for 8chanmania XLIII. Its attempt to wrestle the Christmas Tree out of its favored role as a nativity greening element was met by crushing failure.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • While generally associated with England, the Yule Log also has a French counterpart in the form of the bûche de noël.
  • The latter also inspired a popular type of chocolate cake.
