The Mercedes-Benz 770 (also known as "Großer Mercedes", lit. "Big Mercedes") was a limousine that first entered German production in 1930.
Bio[edit | edit source]
A pure luxury car, the 770 ("W07") of 1930 was introduced as a follow-up to the Mercedes 24/100/140 PS of 1924. Its astronomic price meant that the 770 mostly served as a prestige object for various high-ranking government officials and foreign dignitaries, but its powerful inline eight-cylinder engine and the optional Roots-type supercharger could accelerate the car to a maximum of then-lofty 160 kilometers per hour.
By 1938, Mercedes-Benz released an upgrade in form of the W150. It was this model that popularized the 770 as both Adolf Hitler's official states car, and that of various other Axis leaders such as Italy's Benito Mussolini, Spain's Francisco Franco, and Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim of Finland. Amusingly, Hitler's identification with the coupe version of the W150 went so far that there was a dedicated toy series for the Führer and the Führer's car.
