Daiyousei is the stage 2 mid-boss of Touhou Koumakyou ~ the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, and a recurring mid-boss in the spin-off game Great Fairy Wars.
Bio[edit | edit source]
Since mid-stage bosses in in shoot'em ups generally tend to be fairly generic affairs, ZUN originally designed Daiyousei as exactly that - a relatively generic fairy character that didn't even get a proper name and immediately would be forgotten about after her 15-second boss fight was over. But Touhou works in mysterious ways, and since she shared a stage with Cirno, fans unanimously decided that the generic fairy must be her sidekick.
Christened Daiyousei (after the filename of her in-game sprite), she was imagined to act as a character foil to Cirno herself; being timid and shy whereas Cirno is tomboyish and cocky. Daiyousei indeed proved so unexpectedly popular that ZUN eventually relented by bringing her back for Great Fairy Wars (which itself was a joke over Cirno's stupid amount of popularity). Her still not being given an official name is a nod to the fans as much as it is a running gag.
In 8chanmania[edit | edit source]
Daiyousei so far has only made one apperance, namely in 8chanmania XXXVI. She promptly flew right out of the preliminaries after seeing herself faced with the frost giant Brauggi.
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- Daiyousei's name literally translates into either 'Big Fairy' or 'Greater Fairy' to distinguish her from the regular mooks. A recurring gag sees the 'big' aspect being chiefly located within her chest, whereas the other fairies by all means resemble children.
