8chanmania was a recurring community event originating from the eponymous imageboard 8chan, and more specifically from the board /v/.

Concept[edit | edit source]

Hosted by TNA Anon each Sunday, 8chanmania basically boiled down to repeated livestreams of AI-controlled, 32-man tournaments in a heavily modified version of the game Fire Pro Wrestling World (FPWW). As such, the first round of the tournament would see sixteen fights, the second round eight, and so forth. The fighter to win the last match would be crowned as Champion of the respective mania. After 32 more or less regular Manias, the 32 champions produced over their course would finally dish it out in the grand finals, with the winner becoming the 8chanmania Grand Champion. These, in turn, were bound to fight the battle to end all battles during the very last mania

Aside from the regular 32-man tournaments, 8chanmania also saw regular special events, such as tag team tournaments, or tournaments like the three Christmas manias, where only fighters following a special theme could participate.

Nominations[edit | edit source]

All fighters participating in the tournament proper were nominated by the audience, leading to a notable spike on /v/'s post-per-hours whenever the nomination thread popped up after the end of the previous mania.

While nomination rules were pretty lax early on, TNA Anon eventually decided that each tourney should only have a maximum of six nominations not related to video games (not counting special occasions like the 90s Mania). Another rule prevented characters from being nominated if the game/franchise they were coming on had been in the mania for too many times in a row - chiefly aimed at the notoriously obsessive Touhou fans.

Edits[edit | edit source]

Yuuka Kazami brutalizing Duke Nukem. A perfectly normal fight for 8chanmania.

FPWW's main appeal lies in its fairly powerful editor, which allows the users to build their own wrestlers. This includes shaping their physical appearance by slapping a few thousand different parts on them, deciding which moves they will use in a fight, tinkering with stats such as agility or the strength of their punches, and finally setting up their CPU logic to decide how they actually behave in a battle. Through all this, the users can make the wrestlers of their dreams - so long as they have the time and/or autism to actually learn the arcane workings behind all this stuff.

Consequently, many Anons did not only enjoy the mania because they managed to get their nomination into the next tourney, but also because they themselves build said nomination from the ground up. At its worst, this resulted in either Newface edits that only had a unique appearance but otherwise followed default movesets and CPU logic, or blatantly overpowered munchkin edits that would reliably win matches but were not fun to watch. At its best, edits closely followed the character they were based on - Captain Falcon was all about speed, and Bobby Hill was all about crushing crotches.

Story and Dialogue[edit | edit source]

Originally starting out with no plot at all, TNA Anon soon came up with an excuse version: Calypso from Twisted Metal had used his magical bullshit powers to abduct assorted individuals across space, time, and vidya IPs; promising each to fulfill one wish of theirs if they could become the grand champion. Later events saw Calypso replaced by GLaDOS, SHODAN and Hatsune Miku until the overly expensive special effects put the mania into so much debt that it was re-purchased by IRS, bought up by Banzai INC., and eventually bought back by TNA Anon's daughteru, Default-Chan.

Around the late third of the first season, the introduction of a first dialogue tool allowed "in-game" commentary and pre-matche banter to be played during the streams. This in turn lead to rather hilarious scenarios when - for instance - Lopunny fought Lo Wang, or the TF2 Scout finally got his desired female attention from Spontaneous Bootay. The addition of a newer, more advanced dialogue tool improved on this by allowing stuff like sound effects and overlay images.

The mania ultimately ended with Dr. Morbis becoming the champion of champions and using his new-found power to make cat girls real. Just as it was meant to be.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • 8chanmania handily survived 8chan itself.
